‘Transformers,’ ‘G.I. Joe’ Complete Series Sets to Debut at Comic-Con

Having secured the rights from Hasbro, Shout! Factory is planning an ambitious release slate for 1980s animated staples “The Transformers” and “G.I. Joe.”

The plan, according to Shout! Factory president Garson Foos, is to debut complete-series sets for each show exclusively for sale at San Diego Comic-Con International, running July 23-26, 2009. After that, the sets will be sold online directly to consumers, before a wide retail release. The hope is to capitalize on buzz surrounding the new live-action films for each franchise.

DreamWorks’ Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hits theaters June 24, followed by G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Aug. 7. Both films are being distributed by Paramount Pictures.

The Transformers: 25th Anniversary “Matrix of Leadership” Edition Collector’s Set, containing the four seasons of the “Generation 1” series, will come in packaging modeled after the famed Autobot Matrix artifact featured in the original animated film and the episodes that followed.

DVD producer Brian Ward described the set as a “really cool” box with the Matrix on the cover, which slides apart to reveal a shiny blue foil core which houses the set’s 16 DVDs in plastic digistack trays. The set also will include a collectible booklet.

The “Transformers” complete-series set will include two exclusive bonus features, Ward said. One is a conversation with writer Bob Budiansky, who created much of the “Transformers” mythology for the comic book. The other is a roundtable discussion with eight original members of the voice cast, including Frank Welker (Megatron).

Other extras include content available with the season sets, such as featurettes about the origins of the Transformers, the creation of the TV series and the original toy commercials; printable scripts and rare PSAs that never aired in America.

Shout! Factory sources indicated the “G.I. Joe” complete-series boxed set will come in a foot-locker package, and will include only the episodes animated by Sunbow Productions (a different studio* produced episodes that take place after the animated movie
*Chris' note: DIC).

Ward also promises all the episodes from both shows will include their original opening title sequences, but neither complete-series set will contain the animated films produced for each franchise.

Ward said there are currently no plans for a Blu-ray Disc release of the properties, although the new extras are being recorded in high-definition.

The Transformers: The Complete First Season — 25th Anniversary Edition bows separately June 16 (prebook May 19) as a three-DVD set at $29.99. G.I. Joe: Season 1, Part 1 releases as a four-DVD set July 21 (prebook June 23), also at $29.99.

OFFICIAL: G.I.*Joe Resolute

Hasbro announced today that G.I. Joe: Resolute, an adult fan oriented animated mini-series, will be broadcast via Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim on television as well as online. Based on the classic G.I. JOE brand, Hasbro created 60 minutes of total content for this new story which will be presented as 11 episodes.

Beginning on April 17, fans will be able to see the first five minutes of the brand new, stand-alone animated mini-series on AdultSwim.com. These episodes are broken down to ten 5-minute episodes and one 10-minute finale. Following the first episode on April 17, subsequent installments will be posted on the Adult Swim website leading up to a full presentation of the entire series. This finale will be broadcast on Adult Swim April 25 at midnight. This televised event will not only feature all episodes seen online, but will be the first time fans can watch the final 10 minutes of the G.I. Joe: Resolute saga. All episodes, including the finale, will be available to view online after this airing.

Intended for the adult fan that grew up with the brand in the 80’s, G.I. Joe: Resolute received standing ovations at both the G.I. JOE Convention, “JoeCon,” and San Diego Comic-Con in 2008 where sample clips were previewed. Since then, fans have eagerly been awaiting the announcement of air-dates for the series.

“In a very exciting year for the G.I. JOE brand, we’re thrilled to be able to bring the G.I. Joe: Resolute animated series to the adult G.I. JOE fan,” said Michael Verrecchia, Director of G.I. JOE Entertainment Marketing. “Adult Swim is the perfect broadcast platform to deliver the series, which features a more sophisticated animation style and story than prior animation.”

Hasbro developed the animation with executive producer Sam Register as well as a powerhouse creative team at Titmouse Studios including Joaquim Dos Santos, a veteran animation director, who worked closely with award-winning comic writer Warren Ellis, who penned the entire series. This highly regarded team brings an edgy, intense feel to the series, which will feature the most popular characters in the G.I. JOE vs. COBRA canon. Iconic characters such Duke, Snake Eyes, Scarlett and Roadblock will do battle with Cobra Commander, Destro, Baroness and Storm Shadow.

TRANSFORMERS & GI JOE The COMPLETE Series Sets??

According to a 4.10.09 interview w/Home Media Magazine:
(special thanks to Randy for the news...)

Shout! Factory has signed a multiyear agreement with toymaker Hasbro to bring to DVD several animated properties based on the company’s toy lines. The deal includes episodes of 1980s animated series “The Transformers” and “G.I. Joe.,” as well as the direct-to-DVD animated movie My Little Pony: Twinkle Wish Adventure.

“We’ve wanted this for years,” said Shout! Factory president Garson Foos. “These are all iconic pop-culture brands.”

Foos said the “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” lines were especially relevant, since they appeal to both younger fans and older collectors, and both have live-action adaptations hitting theaters this year.

“I think one of the things that attracted Hasbro to us was they knew we could move fast on these DVDs, but not sacrifice quality,” Foos said.

Foos had been with Rhino when it released the original “Transformers” cartoon on DVD years ago, and said the sets sold well beyond expectations.

Shout! Factory’s first release under the agreement will be The Transformers: The Complete First Season — 25th Anniversary Edition. The set is slated for June 16 (prebook May 19), a week before the big-screen debut of the Michael Bay-directed feature film sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, due in theaters June 24.

The $29.99 three-DVD set will include the original broadcast versions of all 16 episodes from the 1984 season in the intended storyline order, with remastered picture and a new stereo soundtrack created from the original audio. The Rhino releases featured incomplete work prints of episodes and modified sound effects.

Tentative extras include the featurete “Triplechanger: From Toy to Comic to Screen: The Origins of the Transformers,” a printable script, rare PSAs, toy commercials and a limited-edition Autobot magnet.

Foos said Shout! Factory would follow the release with special complete-series sets of “The Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” later this summer. In the case of “G.I. Joe,” Rhino lost the rights before completing its release slate, which means many of the episodes will finally be released for the first time.

The Hasbro deal also includes the potential for Shout! Factory to release additional “My Little Pony” movies.

So I complete rundown would be:
1. Possible Complete Series releases of Transformers & GI Joe
2. More Hasbro animated properties in the works on DVD (Jem? Visionaries?)
3. New remastered broadcast transfer picture & sound & NOT the Rhino 33mm print with amped-up effects...

Awesome...
