SHOUT FACTORY DTC bringing you more classic 80's animation!!

Many know Shout Factory as the company that has brought the recent rereleases of the 80's mega-hits Transformers (as well as for the 1st time) the complete GI Joe: A Real American Hero series, on DVD to peoples homes everywhere in 2009 in remastered quality after a long sleep.
But did you know that Shout's 1st efforts of 80's classic animated TV shows started some years ago?.... & it was with a couple of animated shows that stalled due to the hardcore fanbase only buying them, & retailers saying "no more" to further releases ...Well Shout Factory is hitting back in 2010 with a new "direct to consumer" line of dvd sets sold online directly from the company TO YOU. They are bypassing retail (as WB did very successfully this last year with cult classics & are continuing) with their own unreleased catalog of 80's cartoon retro-hits... Starting off with the long-awaited "C.O.P.S" 80's animated tv series that has not seen any new dvd releases since the 1st volume in 2006, now is getting back in action with Shout Factory's new DTC line in 2010 with volume 2!! Classic 80''s cartoon fans REJOICE, if C.O.P.S. is coming back, could "Jayce & The Wheeled Warriors volume 2" be far behind?

PRODUCING PARKER Season 2 confirmed!!

Hey!
It's been confirmed by series makers Breakthrough Animation themselves that a season 2 of "Producing Parker" is being made!! I am so happy to hear this news as the 1st season's 13 episodes where just not enough for me!! Now I'm getting 13 more!!
***record scratch sound***

Wait a minute, your like "what are you talking about" "I've never even heard of Producing Parker?"
"Now your telling me there's a 2nd season?"

Well...Remember I mentioned how Canada was trying something new with some of their modern animation creations geared more towards women earlier this year?

Well after months of searching I finally got my hands on the show I was looking for... 2009's "Producing Parker."

It's made by the animation team that created "Atomic Betty," & looks more like the
"nicer" current flash animation found on modern CN shows, (like "Stoked")...

The story is some what like "30 Rock", where the cute lead character "Parker Kovak" is the producer of a day-time TV talk show & it's overbearing Hostess "Dee."

It follows her humorous exploits in that position with her co-workers, the head boss she has a romantic interest in, & her single home life with her talking dog.

In contrast to other current North American adult animated sitcoms, the humor is not as crass or as low-brow as shows like "Family Guy."
Since it's only on Canadian cable, it 's kind of unique at this point , as it's able to push the boundaries with profanity we can't use in our sitcoms here ...

Also, they can actually show the girl characters nude, (& in more adult situations/innuendos that would be to obvious for network broadcasts here in the US.)

I don't know if the
show will ever make it's way state-side, & if it did, it would be censored on regular TV for sure, I'm watching it downloaded for now, but you can bet I will be buying this series on Canadian DVD when it's released!!

Easily one of the
best shows (not just animated) of 2009, it looks like Parker's edgy quirky sitcom will be back in 2010~2011 for a fun-filled 2nd season!!. ...And I couldn't be more happy because of it!!

What happend to our Saturday Mornings & Broadcast Cartoons in the last decade?

Any kid from the 80's can tell you that Saturday Mornings were the programming highlight of their week. But over the last decade, we have seen the plethora of Saturday Morning & syndicated/broadcast cartoons decline.
Why?
Well Toon Zone offers an interesting & insightful 3 page article that you can find here.

But ultimately it boils down to this one excerpt from "Toon Zone."

"The FCC not only imposes a quota on educational programming, but also restricts the amount of advertising allowed for all children's programming - E/I (educational / informative)or not. Advertisers, hamstrung by both these regulations and strong cultural pressures on what gets marketed to kids, cut their ad spending. Stations aren't making much profit from cartoons, so they turn to programming that makes them money. If the stations aren't airing cartoons and E/I programming, then the networks have to, and since they're not making much money anyway, they sell that responsibility to the highest bidder.

That's the root of all of this. Money. The television business lives and dies by the advertising dollar. As that advertising dollar shifted away from broadcast kids' TV, the stations began dropping it. There was alternate programming readily available elsewhere which generated more money than cartoons.

Essentially, the broadcast kids' TV business became unprofitable. And that's depressing."

And this is why the 80's & (& some of the 90's) were such magical decades for US TV animation. The rules have changed on the business & the rules end, & because of which, kids & cartoon fans take the hit.

On a positive note...one fan's fun look at their personal favorite animated themes of the golden era of animation for your enjoyment!! One of the many reasons why we love this stuff!!
