Shout! Factory have announced that they will be doing a complete DVD box set for all three of the Transformers Takara Generation 1 series! The Headmasters, Masterforce, and Victory, together for the 1st time in the USA the Transformers series that you never got to see, are coming in a 13 DVD set in July 2011. The price is $99.99, but the preorder on Shout Factory's own website is $89.99. The set is slated to include art galleries and original toy commercials, alongside the original Japanese audio and English subtitles only (no Dub)!

The Hub had it's press announcement talking about their continuing programming for 2011-2012 & GI Joe fandom is in an uproar... because the new hit series "GI Joe Renegades" has been put on hiatus after just 1 season! The decision comes in favor of a new GI Joe cartoon that will tie in closer to the upcoming movie universe made by the upcoming film "GI Joe 2" in 2012 while still lending itself to what Renegades has already established.

According to Cartoon Network cult favorite "Symbionic Titan" has also been canceled after just 1 season for not having enough media tie-ins (toys etc.) to continue with the animation.

After Shout! Factory released the original cartoon version of The Transformers on DVD in 2009-2010, to celebrate that show's 25th anniversary, fans of the GoBots began inquiring about whether or not they would see the similarly-themed cartoon series on home video. The general thinking was that Hasbro owned both the 1984 TV show Challenge of the GoBots AND the 1986 theatrical film GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords, after acquiring the GoBots brand in 1991 when they bought out the Tonka company. Since Hasbro also owns The Transformers brand, including home video rights, the popular opinion was that Hasbro wouldn't want to release GoBots on DVD, because they wanted to keep the focus on the Autobots and Decepticons, rather than possibly confuse the public with the Guardians and the Renegades.

Still, there was always the thought that perhaps the home video rights to the TV show and/or film might instead lie with Warner Brothers, through their ownership of Hanna-Barbera (which was responsible for the GoBots animated productions). And the Warner Archive Collection (WAC) has been putting out lots of Hanna-Barbera TV shows lately on DVD, as part of their manufacture-on-demand (MOD) program. So earlier this week, Nick Simmons reached out to the studio at WAC's fan page on Facebook, asking them straight-out about ownership, and getting a concrete answer to this at last! Here's the exchange:

Nick - Do you own the rights to Hanna-Barbera's Challenge of the GoBots cartoon series or its movie GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords? I'd really like to see both on DVD some day.
WAC - The GoBots are heading your way soon!
Nick - Sweet, both the series and the movie then?
WAC - At this point, just the series.....

The folks at the Warner Archive confirmed for Nick on Twitter that their GoBots plans are for the "TV series. Not the film." No word yet on when we'll see the show become available on their MOD program, nor what the configuration will be. Since Challenge of the GoBots consisted of 65 half-hour episodes, it's likely that Warner will have to break this up into more than one multi-disc DVD "volume" sets. We're keeping an eye on this, and how it eventually becomes available (and when, etc.). Stay tuned for further updates!

*PERSONAL NOTE* I can't believe it!! This much sought after & near impossible gray market title is seeing a eventual MOD DVD release proves that anything still has a chance of coming to dvd even in this slumping consumer day & age. The Gobots series has been considered to be "forever in limbo" or "eternally dead" due to Hasbro acquiring the rights to Tonka & thus US Gobots trademarks, most assumed they also had absorbed the HB animation, but with WB owning HB's animation the impossible is now coming true. I'll be looking forward to retiring my gray market set for the nice quality WB MOD dvd sets!!

Animation artist artist Boyd Kirkland passed away on January 27th, while awaiting a lung transplant. Kirkland worked on some very notable series during his career. More info:

After moving to Los Angeles in 1984, Kirkland worked as a storyboard artist on productions like G.I. Joe: The Movie, My Little Pony: The Movie, Dungeons & Dragons, Robocop, Conan, and Gargoyles. He was one of the earliest directors on Batman the Animated Series, going on to co-direct the Batman: Mask of the Phantasm feature film and direct the Batman: Sub-Zero direct-to-video feature. In 2000, Kirkland developed and produced X-Men: Evolution for Marvel Entertainment, writing and directing several episodes for the series, as well providing the screen story for the Ultimate Avengers direct-to-video movies and writing and directing episodes of Wolverine and the X-Men.

Last night, Clement Sauve -- G.I. JOE: RENEGADES' Character Designer (and resident Canadian) -- passed away at age 33 after a brief illness. We want fans to know that no one on the planet was prouder of G.I. JOE RENEGADES than Clem; it was his first experience with tv animation, and he relished every minute. We sincerely love the guy; he will be sorely missed.

Budget DVD producers MILL CREEK have signed on to license from Cookie Jar Entertainment (holder of a plethora of DIC's 80's & 90's animated titles) & will be releasing many new & previously seen incomplete shows--now made complete to DVD!!

They are starting off with C.O.P.S the complete series in 2 volumes, for around $10 each!
Volume 1 (in March) will have 33 episodes & volume 2 (possibly May) will have 32 (including 21 not released previously by Shout!Factory)...

Leipzig, Germany-based Firehazard Studio has announced its plans to make a new game basedon the 1987 TV Seies SABER RIDER & THE STAR SHERIFFS, which was itself a reworking of the 1984 Studio Pierrot TV anime Star Musketeer Bismarck. Firehazard is making the game for the Nintendo 3DS portable console and currently plans to release it in the third quarter of 2011.

In the press release, Firehazard's Managing Director Chris Strauß said that he has wanted to make a Saber Rider game since childhood, and that the company's employees have been in love with the series for years, "along with millions of other fans." An official website for the game has already been launched.

"The Real Ghostbusters" based on the 1984 live-action film, "Ghostbusters" Hi-C struck a deal in 1987 to promote the series by developing a drink. Expected to last only as long as the series, the drink was successful beyond expectations and continued after the series' 1991 cancellation to be produced for more than a decade. The Ecto-Cooler box featured The Real Ghostbusters character "Slimer", as did the commercials. Slimer left the box sometime around 1997, but Minute Maid did not discontinue the product until 2001, at which point it was renamed Shoutin' Orange Tangergreen. Slimer was replaced on the packaging by a similar-looking blob of lips. The product was still noted as ecto cool on many store receipts.

In 2006, Shoutin' Orange Tangergreen was renamed Crazy Citrus Cooler.

In 2007, Crazy Citrus Cooler was discontinued.

To this day there are geeks everywhere clamoring for Ecto-Cooler, & a ongoing petition to Hi-C to bring the recipe back!! >_<

Through this store they have been offering back catalog of titles that retailers may not be interested in... but collectors definately are!! When you order (or preorder) a DVD it is made using the finest technolgies for a high grade DVD-R to play in your DVD player or game station (*do not put these in your PC as they are copy protected & you will lose the data*).
I bought a couple of their cult classic titles before & I can assure you that the quality, art covers, & cases are as good as anything you would get in the store & an amazing way to get unattainable titles. WBA has done an fantastic job so far with the very successful back catalog titles the past couple years & now they are getting into their vast cartoon archieves & releasing the 90's adventure classic "Pirates Of Dark Water The Complete Series!! Jim Vowles, a member of the Otakorp Board of Directors for the Otakon convention, has announced on Tuesday that director Satoshi Kon has passed away. Kon was 47. The staff of Otakon confirmed his passing with MADHOUSE studio founder Masao Maruyama. Maruyama had wrote on his Twitter account on Tuesday night in Japan that an important director of the studio had suddenly passed away. However, Maruyama declined to name the director at the time.

Kon began working as a manga creator on such works as Kaikisen (1990) before deciding to delve into the anime industry with the art design of Hiroyuki Kitakubo and Katsuhiro Otomo's Roujin Z video in 1991. He then worked on the script and art direction of "Magnetic Rose," a segment of Otomo's 1995 science-fiction anthology film Memories.

Kon first drew worldwide attention with his feature film directorial debut, the psychological suspense film Perfect Blue, in 1997. He would follow that with a string of critically acclaimed anime projects: Millennium Actress (2001), Tokyo Godfathers (2003), Paranoia Agent (2004), and Paprika (2006). At the time of his passing, Kon was working at MADHOUSE on a new feature film called Yume-Miru Kikai.

He died from pancriotic cancer @ 46. =(

* On a personal note, "Perfect Blue" is one of my all time favorite anime movies, Kon was never a guest at Otakon, but I was lucky enough to have producer Masao Maruyama sign & personalize my dvd in 2005.
Kon was one of the best up & coming Japanese animation directors, & was one of the few I recognized that excited me with each announcement. He will be missed...

The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern “Avatar” world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

Avatar: The Last Airbender was created and executive produced by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

AVATAR: Legend of KORRA

Avatar: Legend of Korra is an upcoming animation project set in the Avatar universe. The title was trademarked by Nickelodeon in May 2010 and leaked by the media shortly afterward; more information was revealed in late June 2010, just prior to the release of the feature film "The Last Airbender." While unconfirmed, multiple sources have stated that the project is a brand new television series.

Nickelodeon is currently staffing up for production, adding that "Avatar: The Last Airbender" co-creatorsMichael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko are involved and that more information will be forthcoming at a later date, possibly Comic-Con 2010. According to fansite Dongbufeng.net, the series will take place 100 years in the future...

The show is also reported to feature CG shorts with Wile E. Coyote & Road Runner & "Merrie Melodies": 2-minute music videos showcasing classic characters singing original songs.

We have a bunch of new shows premiering this fall & in 2011 that were 4 of the 5 biggest cartoon series of the 80's(-He-Man) ... between Transformers: Prime, GI Joe: Reneagades, Voltron: Force (formerly known as Voltron "Panthera Force") & Thundercats, we are seeing what currently Hollywood is all about with remakes, plus something similar to what happened towards the beginning of last decade... lots of the "best of 80's properties" making a comeback. ^_^

Hasbro will be handling the merch for Transformers & GI Joe of course, & Mattel has Voltron & Bandai has Thundercats...

Some animation definitely I am looking forward to, & am hoping they all can rival the beloved originals.

In 2004 the Filmation library of television shows was purchased by a British company, Entertainment Rights ("ER"), who licensed the North American home video rights for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe to BCI Eclipse. BCI did a great job releasing He-Man on DVD in 2005-06, so ER also dealt them the DVD rights to other Filmation shows, including She-Ra: Princess of Power. Following She-ra's equally terrific DVD releases in 2006-07, BCI bagan to fall on hard times as the beginnings of the late-2000s economic recession began to be felt. By the end of 2008, parent company Navarre had shut down BCI, and quite a few of the properties whose home video rights were contracted to them had been left in limbo. Many of those properties ended up at Mill Creek Entertainment, but the various Filmation library titles have never been among them.

Since ER currently owns Classic Media, the studio which produces DVD releases of such animated classics as Rocky & Bullwinkle, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, Underdog and others, it made sense to us all along that the Filmation properties would probably land over at Classic at some point. Today we've learned that this is now happening! Classic Media and distributor Vivendi Entertainment have begun solicating to retailers a September 7th DVD release of She-Ra: Princess of Power - The Complete Series. It's described as a 10-disc set with 93 episodes running approx. 2000 minutes (33+ hours) long. These will be presented in the original full-frame video and English mono audio of the television broadcasts. It is NOT known whether or not The He-Man & She-Ra Christmas Special is included as part of this package (it's not mentioned, and the 93-episode count wouldn't seem to include it). Nor is there any reference to the "film edit" version of the original 5 episodes, "The Secret of the Sword". On the other hand, we do know that there will be some "swag" included inside of the packaging: Classic/Vivendi's solicitation to retailers mentions that bonus material found inside the box will include "T-shirt iron on, mini comic and more!" All of this will be enclosed by "eye-catching" collectible packaging with an elaborate o-ring outer card. This is all timed to tie-in with the 25th Anniversary of She-Ra, and even though the new DVD releases aren't happening until the near-fall time of year, Mattel is promoting the She-ra character with a new action figure at their Comic-Con booth in June, so visitors to that event in the coming weeks can probably expect to find out more about Classic Media's DVDs while there.

Package art images and pricing for She-Ra: Princess of Power - The Complete Series was not available in the information we saw, but Classic/Vivendi is keeping in mind that not everybody can afford an elaborate 10-DVD set right now. So they are also planning a lower-end 2-DVD package with the show's first 20 episodes, titled She-Ra: Princess of Power - Season 1, Volume 1. Keep in mind that BCI's now-discontinued releases had included a six-disc set of the exact same title, with thirty-three episodes on those discs. However, Classic Media's new release isn't following the same blueprint, so don't expect it to be the same: it has fewer discs and episodes, to ring up a lower price at the cash register. It will be available on the same date as The Complete Series collection: September 7th. On-disc extras and in-box bonus items, if any, weren't mentioned for this title in the info provided to retailers. Nor do we have specific pricing or package art for it yet, either. Also, there has not yet been any word about new DVD releases of the original 1983 Filmation He-Man series. Stay tuned, however, and we'll update you as soon as we find out anything further!

With less than five months to go before its official launch, The Hub on Monday formally announced its inaugural programming lineup, taking the wraps off a mix of six original series and a dozen acquired programs.

The new joint venture from Discovery Communications and toymaker Hasbro bows on Oct. 10 with five home-grown series, plus a pair of shows produced by The Hatchery, a production company founded in 2003 by Hub president and CEO Margaret Loesch.

The five Hasbro Studios programs include a pair of animated shows (G.I. Joe Renegades and Pound Puppies), as well as a one-hour game show, Family Game Night. Joining the newly unveiled Hasbro series are Transformers Prime and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, both of which were announced last fall.

Meanwhile, the two projects from The Hatchery are: R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour, a live-action anthology series based on the work of the titular kiddie-horror author, and Dan Vs., a cooperative effort with the Starz Media unit Film Roman.

Also on the roster is The 99, an adaptation of the comic book series of the same name in which a team of multinational superheroes band together to fight the forces of evil. The 99 is produced by Teshkeel Media and Endemol Digital UK Production Group.

Among the acquired Hub series are a number of familiar properties, including the Jim Henson classic Fraggle Rock, the Animal Planet franchise Meerkat Manor and a new CGI-animated Strawberry Shortcake.

“I’m delighted with the caliber of programming—which includes some beloved and popular brands—that we are bringing to the network’s new lineup,” said Loesch, by way of announcing the new slate. “We are focused on bringing together a diverse slate and a wide array of amazing creative talent to make The Hub a popular destination for children and their families.”

The Hub’s schedule will be divided into four demo-specific blocks. Preschool programming for kids 2-5 will air from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., while the 1 p.m.-6 p.m. Kids Afternoon/Prime block will look to make a splash with the network’s primary target, members of the 6-12 crowd. Capping the programming day, Family Prime Access (6 p.m.-7 p.m.) leads into Family Prime (7 p.m. to 11 p.m.).

Set to bow in 60 million U.S. households, the Hub will be Nielsen-rated upon launch...

It's a sad moment that I have to report the passing today of Fantasy Illustrator Icon Frank Frazetta from a stroke...
Frazetta is one of the most influential artists on me, particularly in my college years & later, his long life & long history of art are hard to compare any fantasy artist in sheer scope & power.
Anyone who knows me knows of his impact on my expressions... or has seen my collections of calendars, figures, & books... He will be sorely missed as one of the most influential fantasy artists ever, his photographic memory & steady hand are a testament to any great illustrator.
He was so ambitious he actually began painting with his left hand when his right was rendered useless from health problems!!
From his illustration work to his animated movie "Fire & Ice," Frank was one of the best.
Still is.
I recommend see the dvd documentary "Painting With Fire" as it's a wonderful look into Frank's life...

Rest in peace Frank.

I was at the official GI Joe Con aka "JoeCon" 2010 this past weekend & wanted to share my enthusiasm about the new GI Joe animation coming to Hasbro/Discovery Channel's new TV station "The Hub!!"

It's called GI Joe Renegades & will be written for adults but still be cool for kids, the classic style animation looked similar to more modern American designed Comic-Anime hybrids like "GI Joe Resolute" or "Generator Rex."

The guys working on Renegades are extremely enthusiastic, here is some cliff-notes I took:

Carl Macek 1951~2010

It's a sad day for US anime fandom, as US Anime distro forefather Carl Macek passed away sadly over the weekend (4/17) due to a heart attack at age 58.
"Uncle Carl" was one of the original people to bring anime to the US (Robotech), abit modified of course for US TV standards, but he did what he had to do to get a a wonderful genre of animation to US fans who had never seen anything like it before. He is one of the pioneers. Producer, active dubber, & one of the originals to help uncensored anime get to video stores everywhere in the US in the 90's. He worked with Harmony Gold, co-founded Streamline, & was helping ADV & Funimation toward the end of his career. RIP Uncle Carl.

WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN CANCELLED!!

Much to the surprise of cartoon fans everywhere, Nickelodeon's hyper popular "Wolverine & The X-Men" has been canceled!! Shocked fans lament over the fact that we have heard on several occasions that this terrific show had been renewed for a 2nd season & was in progress with an "Age Of Apocalypse" story arc, & it's popularity across the borders helped it get there. Marvel Animation Age reports that Sony/Marvel are looking to move on to new ideas for properties & that both W&TXM & "Spectacular Spiderman" (which will be replaced by a new "Ultimate Spiderman" series on Disney) are no longer in the works. A very surprising & saddening turn of events... if you never watched W&TXM do yourself a favor & check it out on DVD (hopefully a full season box will be coming soon), it's almost like a more mature return to the "X-Men Evolution" days, & proved to be an entertaining show with great animation, character designs & continuity for all ages. One of the current best animated series on (along the likes of Avatar:The Last Airbender & Clone Wars) it will be missed!!

***UPDATE: Appearantly W&TXM cancellation is because they were unable to work out the financing for the show with their financing partner... =(

RECORD OF LODOSS WAR has been rescued from being Out of Print in the US!! Still kicking their anime oldskool, distro company Media Blasters has relicensed former anime giant CPM's fallen property after bankruptcy. Fans who missed out on both of CPM's OVA & TV releases of this series on DVD years ago can rejoice as the both the OVA & TV series will be coming back to US store shelves!! (date TBA) It's basically the Dungeons & Dragons of anime & the OVA series is one of my personal all time favorite anime series!!

Also fans of the CPM's Anime 18 cult classic Urotsukidoji: Legend Of The Overfiend (the hentai in the US that started it all) will also be able to get the blood rushing again as Media Blasters (thru Kitty Media) have relicensed the title & will be rereleasing it in both OVA (The Complete 1st series) & Movie formats to dvd come 5/18/2010!!

My note:
This is great news, as the original Rhino dvd had lots of video quality problems. I picked it up a couple years ago & digitization, lacing, color bleeds, ect. are all present. Other than ADV's Battle Angel it's one of sadest pro-animation transfers I have ever scene in digital format, & basically looks like it was made when dvd technology was new. I'm glad that Shout! seems to have a better print for their BD release. I will be happy to make the upgrade... Just the opening sequence alone is worth it!!

If you haven't seen this show yet, it's on FX @ 10:00pm, & you owe it to yourself, as it doesn't play by the rules, bloody fights, the s-word & female bare bottoms are always welcomed lol!! I saw this show pack when it premiered with a pilot earlier in 2009, & was glad to see it become a series of 10 eps in 2010. Like "Archer" & "Producing Parker", I hope to see more animated adult sitcoms continue the trend that we saw in 2009 with being as bold & inventive as the 2 aforementioned shows.

LOS ANGELES, February 22, 2010 – FX has given the go ahead for a second season of its critically acclaimed animated series Archer, announced Nick Grad, Executive Vice President of Original Programming, FX Networks. The network increased the episode order to 13 for season two, which is scheduled to debut in 2011.

Archer (TV-MA) has three new episodes slated for air this season. Through seven episodes the series is averaging 1.2 million Total Viewers, 853,000 Adults 18-49 and 573,000 Adults 18-34. This Thursday, February 25, FX will air the “Four-Play Marathon,” four episodes of Archer from 10-midnight. Archer will return with new episodes on Thursday, March 4 at 10 PM and the season-one finale airs on March 18.

“Executive Producers Adam Reed and Matt Thompson are delivering a hilarious series and it truly earned a second season,” said Grad. “H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Jessica Walter, Chris Parnell and Judy Greer comprise one of the best voice casts of any animated series on TV. We’re very happy with the audience response and critical acclaim for Archer and are excited to move forward with it.”

Archer was created by Adam Reed and Floyd County Productions and is executive produced by Reed and Matthew Thompson. The show is produced by FX Productions. FX ordered 10 episodes for its first season.

Sony is going to release the complete series of the short-lived 80's Saturday Morning animated series "The Karate Kid" on 5/4/2010 on itunes & amazon.
* Response has been good & fans are hoping for a follow up on DVD...

The cartoon had good animation, a memorable theme from animation composer extraordinaire Shuki Levy, & a less memorable flub when the network aired episode 1 again in week 3, probably sinking most interest in the series for kids, "2 weeks & a repeat already? Let's watch The Real Ghostbusters instead!!' Lol

I've always found Floro Dery (the Filipino character designer for the Transformers G1 animated series & '86 movie) very interesting, as not only was he a huge inspiration for me growing up as an artist, but also because he's a bit sarcastic, & his unique view on his own art & it's glory is always great reading material... see below...lol
